Let’s just cut the crap for a second.
Walk into your back room right now.
Go ahead. I’ll wait.
What do you see?
If it looks like a craft store exploded inside a shipping container, you are not alone. I swear, florists are the biggest pack rats on the planet. We keep every single weird branch. We hold onto that one random ceramic bunny from Easter 2019 because “we might use it again.” We have seven half-empty rolls of burlap in different shades of beige that are basically the same color but not quite.
And where is all this stuff?
It is piled on top of your design table. It is stacked next to the walk-in cooler. It is blocking the fuse box that the fire marshal keeps threatening to write you up for.
We do this because we are creative. We see potential in everything.
But here is the problem nobody talks about: Our clutter is literally costing us money.
You are paying rent on your shop space. That rent is usually calculated by the square foot. If 30% of your shop is filled with boxes of vases and old wedding arches, you are essentially throwing that 30% of your rent into the trash every single month.
You need a dumping ground. But not just any dumping ground. You need a place where you can actually find things.
The Great “Dry vs. Wet” Divide
Here is something that took me way too long to learn.
You have to separate your “wet” inventory from your “dry” inventory.
Your “wet” stuff is the flowers. The greens. The live plants. That stuff needs the cooler. It needs the water. It needs the humidity. That stays in the shop.
Your “dry” stuff is literally everything else. And I mean everything.
- The 80 glass cylinders you bought in bulk.
- The chicken wire and floral foam.
- The ribbon collection that weighs more than your car.
- The boxes of tissue paper you ordered for wedding season.
- The easels, the arches, the trellises, the “rustic” signs that are actually just old pallets.
That “dry” stuff does not care if the temperature drops to 40 degrees. It does not care if it’s humid or dry. It just needs a safe place to sit until you need it.
So why are you keeping all that dry stuff in your premium retail space?
It does not make sense.
I started moving all my “dry” inventory out of my shop and into a storage unit a few years back, and I swear it changed my life. My shop went from feeling like a cramped closet to feeling like an actual design studio again.
The Wedding Season Panic (You Know the One)
Let me paint you a picture.
It’s May. You have three weddings this weekend. You have a prom order. And you have the daily funerals.
You are already drowning.
You rush to your back room to grab the 24 matching vases you ordered specifically for the Saturday wedding. You know you have them. You ordered them. You signed for the box.
But where are they?
You spend 15 minutes tearing through boxes. You are sweating. You are cursing. You are knocking over a stack of plastic liners that you just organized.
Finally, you find them. They are buried behind a box of Christmas ornaments (it’s May, why do you still have Christmas ornaments?) and a broken mannequin from a window display you did in 2022.
That 15 minutes of panic? That is time you could have spent actually designing. That is time you could have used to breathe. Instead, you are rage-cleaning your back room.
This is the exact reason why having a dedicated, organized storage space is not a luxury. It is a survival tool.
When I moved my supplies to a storage unit, I finally had control.
I know exactly where the wedding vases are. I know where the extra easels are. I don’t have to panic when my shop is a disaster because my shop is not a disaster anymore. The disaster is somewhere else, tucked away neatly on shelves.
Stop Buying Stuff You Already Own
I am guilty of this and I know you are too.
How many times have you bought a new roll of ribbon because you thought you were out, only to find three other rolls of the exact same color shoved behind a box of Styrofoam?
It happens constantly.
When your inventory is scattered all over creation, you lose track of what you actually have. You start second-guessing yourself. So you order more. You “play it safe.” And suddenly you have six boxes of floral tape that you will not use for another two years.
A storage unit solves this because it forces you to get organized.
I have a simple system now:
- Clear plastic bins.
- Big, fat Sharpie labels on the front.
- A running list on my phone of what is in each bin.
If I need “white pillar candles,” I check my list. I know exactly which bin they are in and which storage unit they are located in.
I stopped buying duplicates. Do you know how much money that saves me over the course of a year? It is not a small number. It is the difference between breaking even and actually turning a profit on a wedding gig.
The “Holding Zone” for Bulk Orders
We all know the seasonal game.
Valentine’s Day is coming. Mother’s Day is coming.
You need to order your supplies months in advance to get the best price. But when that truck shows up with 50 cases of glass vases, where do you put them?
You cannot leave them on the sidewalk.
If you have a storage unit, you have a holding zone. You can receive your bulk orders and stash them away immediately. You do not have to trip over them for three weeks while you wait for the holiday rush to start.
When the chaos begins, you just make a few trips to your unit. You grab what you need for the day, bring it to the shop, and process it.
You are essentially using your storage unit as a warehouse.
And the best part? You do not have to look at those boxes every single day. You do not have to stare at them and feel stressed about the upcoming holiday. They are out of sight, out of mind, until you need them.
The Car vs. The Cooler
Let me ask you something.
Where are you storing your big stuff?
I am talking about the arches. The huge wooden frames. The life-size “LOVE” letters that are so popular for photo backdrops.
Are you storing them at your house?
Because I did that once.
My garage was full. My basement was full. My neighbors thought I was running a lumber yard out of my driveway.
And honestly? It made me feel unprofessional.
When you have to explain to a bride that you “have to run home to grab the arch,” it just sounds… sloppy.
Having a dedicated business storage unit gives you credibility. You have one place where everything lives. If you need to pick up an arch for a setup, you go to the storage unit. You grab it. You go to the venue.
It keeps your home life separate from your work life. And I cannot tell you how important that is for your mental health. You need to be able to close the door on work.
So, What Do You Actually Put In There?
If you are still on the fence, let me break down exactly what I keep in my storage unit right now.
- Vases and Vessels: I have them sorted by color and height. Short cylinders. Tall cylinders. Bud vases. I have a shelf just for “rustic” stuff and another just for “modern.”
- Ribbon: I have a bin for natural fibers and a bin for synthetics. No more tangled messes.
- Foam and Mechanics: All the chicken wire, floral foam, and tape go in one large tub.
- Candles: Pillars, votives, tapers.
- Hardware: Easels, stands, trellises.
- Gift Wrap: Bags, tissue, cellophane.
- Event Props: Anything specific to a wedding that I am saving for the setup day.
You can keep all of this safe, secure, and organized.
Let’s Get Real About Your Workflow
Here is the bottom line.
You are an artist. But you are also a business owner.
The art part is why you started this job. The business part is why you have to stay organized.
If your shop is a mess, you are losing money. You are losing time. You are losing your patience.
We want to help you fix that.
We have storage units that are perfect for florists. They are clean, they are dry, and they are accessible. You can come and go as you please. You can organize them however you want.
We have seen florists use our units to completely transform their business. They go from drowning in clutter to having a streamlined, efficient operation.
So take a good look at your back room right now.
Is it working for you? Or is it working against you?
If it is working against you, it is time to make a change. Rent a unit with us. Move the clutter out.
It is just a storage unit. But trust me, it feels like a fresh start.
Get your space back. You will sleep better at night. And you will actually enjoy walking into your shop again. That is the goal, right?
