Look, I get it. You finally broke down and bought that fancy smart thermostat. Maybe you wanted to save a few bucks on your electric bill. Maybe you just really liked the idea of adjusting the temperature from your bed without having to get up. We’ve all been there.
But here’s the thing nobody tells you about. What do you actually do with the old one?
Maybe you upgraded and the old unit is still perfectly good. Maybe you bought the wrong model and you’re holding onto it until you figure out the return policy. Or maybe you’re one of those organized people who likes to keep a backup just in case the new one decides to crap out on the coldest night of the year.
Whatever your reason, you’ve now got a small computer with a screen sitting on your kitchen counter. And if you’re like most folks, your first instinct is to shove it in a drawer with some old cables and call it a day.
Please don’t do that.
I run a storage facility. You wouldn’t believe the stuff people bring in that’s completely ruined because they thought “storage” just meant “out of sight.” Electronics are fragile little snowflakes, and thermostats are some of the worst offenders.
Let me walk you through what you actually need to do. It’s not rocket science, but it takes about ten minutes of your time and could save you two hundred bucks down the road.
First Thing: Get the Power Situation Sorted
Here is where most people go wrong immediately. They just yank the thing off the wall plate and toss it in a box.
Your smart thermostat has a battery in it. Even when it’s not on the wall, that battery is still doing stuff. It’s keeping the memory alive, holding your Wi-Fi settings, all that jazz. If you just let it sit for months, that battery is slowly draining. And if it’s one of those lithium ones? Sometimes they swell up. Sometimes they leak.
Do yourself a favor.
Check your model. Some of them have removable AA batteries in the back. Some have built-in rechargeables. If you can pop the batteries out, do it. Take them out, put them in a little baggie, and tape it to the outside of the box you’re using. If it’s a built-in one that you can’t remove, just let the thing drain down to about halfway before you store it. Don’t store it fully charged, and definitely don’t store it completely dead.
I know it sounds nitpicky, but I’ve opened up storage lockers where people kept their electronics for six months and the inside of the battery compartment looks like a science experiment gone wrong. Green gunk everywhere. You don’t want that.
Clean It Like You Actually Care
Okay, this is going to sound obvious, but you’d be surprised.
Your thermostat sits on your wall all day, every day. It’s collecting dust, cooking grease if you have an open kitchen, pet hair if you’ve got a shedding dog, all that nasty stuff. If you just box that up, you’re sealing all that grime in with the device.
Grab a microfiber cloth. Not a paper towel. Paper towels scratch screens. Wipe down the display gently.
Now flip it over. Look at the back where all the little metal pins are. See that dust? Take a dry paintbrush, like a small artist brush, and just sweep it out. If there’s sticky stuff on there, dip a Q-tip in rubbing alcohol and lightly dab it. Don’t soak it. Just enough to get the gunk off.
Here’s why this matters more than you think. Dust holds moisture. Even if you live in a dry climate, the air has some humidity. If you trap a dusty thermostat in a plastic bag, that dust attracts the moisture, and it starts corroding those little pins.
When you finally pull it out of storage a year later and plug it in, it won’t even turn on. And you’ll be sitting there scratching your head wondering what went wrong. It was the dust. It’s always the dust.
The Bag Trick
You don’t need fancy anti-static bags unless you’re storing a computer motherboard. For a thermostat, a good Ziploc freezer bag works great.
Put the cleaned thermostat in there. Push out as much air as you can before sealing it. This keeps the humidity out.
Now here is a pro-tip from someone who sees this every day. Throw a silica gel packet in there. You know those little white packets that come in shoe boxes that say “do not eat”? Yeah, those. They absorb moisture. If you don’t have one, a tablespoon of uncooked rice in the corner of the bag works in a pinch. It sounds silly, but it actually works.
Wrap It Like It’s Breakable
Because it is.
That screen is glass. If you toss this thing in a box with a bunch of other junk, you’re asking for a crack.
If you kept the original packaging, you’re golden. Use it. That foam mold was designed specifically to hold that shape.
If you’re like the rest of us and you threw that box out months ago, grab a sturdy cardboard box. Not a flimsy Amazon envelope. A real box. Crumple up some newspaper or packing paper at the bottom. Wrap your Ziploc-bagged thermostat in a t-shirt or a hand towel. Not newspaper directly on the plastic, because newspaper ink can transfer if there’s any humidity.
Put it in the center of the box. Make sure it doesn’t move. If you shake the box and you hear anything sliding, you didn’t use enough padding. Add more.
Where to Actually Put the Thing
This is the part where I see people make the biggest mistakes.
They think, “Oh, I’ll just stick this in the garage.” Bad idea.
The garage gets hot in the summer. Like, really hot. That heat can mess with the LCD screen. It can make the battery expand. It can melt the adhesive holding the screen on.
They think, “Okay, the attic then.” Worse.
The basement? Only if it’s finished and humidity-controlled. If it’s a damp, musty basement, that moisture is going to get into the box and ruin everything.
You need a place that stays cool and dry. Room temperature. A closet inside your house is actually a great spot. A spare bedroom. Under your bed in a plastic tote. Somewhere that doesn’t experience extreme temperature swings.
If your house is packed to the gills and you genuinely don’t have room, that’s where a climate-controlled storage unit comes into play.

You don’t need a massive locker for a thermostat, obviously, but if you’re storing a whole bunch of electronics, or you’re in the middle of a move and all your stuff is in limbo, climate control is non-negotiable. I cannot tell you how many people rent a standard unit, throw their TVs and laptops in there over the summer, and come back to find everything fried from the heat. Don’t be that person. If you care about your stuff, spend the few extra bucks on temperature regulation.
Don’t Forget the Little Pieces
You took the thermostat off the wall. There’s probably a wall plate still attached to your drywall with screws. Did you take that off too? Or are you leaving it?
If you took the whole thing down, you’ve got screws and little wire labels floating around.
Get a small Ziploc snack bag. Put all the screws, the wall anchors, and any little adapters in there. Tape that baggie to the outside of the big box.
Because I promise you, when you go to reinstall this thing in two years, you will not remember where you put those tiny screws. You’ll be at the hardware store buying replacements that don’t quite fit, and you’ll be frustrated. Just tape them to the box. It takes five seconds.
Label It Like You’re a Librarian
Here’s a test for you. Look at the random boxes in your garage right now. Can you tell me what’s in them without opening them? Probably not.
Take a Sharpie. Write on the outside of the box.
Write the brand. Write the model number. Write the date you packed it.
“Ecobee SmartThermostat – packed June 2026” is way more helpful than just “thermostat” or “electronics.”
If you’re putting this in a storage unit, keep a little notebook or a note on your phone that tells you exactly which box is which. Trust me, when you’re standing in a 10×10 unit surrounded by forty boxes, you’re not going to want to open every single one looking for a thermostat. You’ll want to grab Box #7 and go home.
How Long Are We Talking Here?
Let’s break it down by time.
- If you’re storing this for a month or two because you’re painting the living room or having floors done, you can leave the battery in. Just make sure the device is powered off in the settings.
- If you’re storing it for six months or more, take the batteries out. It’s not worth the risk.
And if you’re storing it for a year or more, check on it once in a while. I’m serious. Pop the box open, check the bag for condensation, check the battery compartment. It takes two minutes and it could save you from opening a box of rust later.
Bringing It Back to Life
So you’ve stored it for a while and now you want to use it again. Don’t just slap it on the wall immediately.
Bring the box inside. Let it sit for a full day. Let it acclimate to room temperature.
If the bag has any condensation inside, wipe the device down with a dry cloth. Let it air out for a few hours.
Check the pins on the back. Look for any discoloration. If you see a little bit of tarnish, hit it with some electronic contact cleaner. If you see green fuzz or white powder, you might be out of luck. That’s corrosion and it’s usually a death sentence.
If everything looks clean, pop the batteries back in, mount it on the wall, and fire it up. It should reconnect to your Wi-Fi and work like nothing ever happened.
A Little Tough Love
Here’s the bottom line. You paid good money for that thermostat. Maybe it was a hundred bucks, maybe it was three hundred. It’s a piece of technology that relies on delicate internal components.
You wouldn’t toss your laptop in a damp shed for a year and expect it to work. So why would you do that to your thermostat?
Take the extra few minutes. Clean it. Bag it. Box it. Store it in a place that doesn’t get too hot or too cold.
