Look, I’m just going to say it.
If you are storing metals, and you just toss them into a plastic tote and slide it under the bed or into a corner of a unit, you are playing with fire. Actually, that’s the wrong analogy. You are playing with water. And oxygen. And weird acidic vapors that you can’t even smell.
I work around storage units all day, and the amount of people I see open up their lockers with a massive grin, only to pull out a box of completely destroyed copper pipes or a silver coin set that looks like it was dug up from a shipwreck, is heartbreaking. They always say the same thing: “I don’t understand, it was fine when I put it in here!”
Yeah, it was fine. But metals don’t stay fine. They are inherently lazy. They are always trying to revert back to the dirt they came from. Your job—and our job, since we run this facility—is to fight that process.
So, let me walk you through the stuff that is actually going to ruin your day, and skip all the fluffy nonsense.
The Invisible Sponge
Let’s talk about the air in your unit.
You might walk into your storage space and think, “Feels dry in here.” But I promise you, there is moisture in there. It floats around. But here is the kicker—it doesn’t just stay floating. When the temperature changes, that moisture condenses.
You know when you take a cold soda out of the fridge on a hot day and the outside gets all wet? That exact same thing happens to your metal. The metal gets cold overnight, the sun comes up and warms the air, and suddenly, your steel beams are sweating.
If you are storing raw steel, iron, or tools, that sweat turns into orange rust in about 48 hours. I’ve seen brand new wrenches become useless paperweights just because they were leaning against an outer wall.
So, here is my first piece of advice that isn’t textbook garbage:
- Get your metals off the floor. Seriously. Concrete is a giant cold slab that pulls moisture from the ground. Put down a pallet, old carpet, or even a few layers of cardboard—anything works. If your metal is touching concrete, you are losing that battle before it even starts.
- Keep them away from the walls too. Outer walls get cold and trap condensation. Pull your bins and tools toward the center of the unit. That foot or two of space makes a massive difference.
The “Food” Problem
This one sounds crazy, but stick with me.
Have you ever stored a bunch of metal stuff in a cardboard box? A lot of people do that. They take old Amazon boxes, load them up with nuts and bolts or old coins, and tape them shut.
Cardboard is the enemy.
Why? Because cardboard is basically wood pulp, and wood pulp releases acidic gases as it breaks down. It’s a very slow process, but those gases hover inside that box and literally eat away at the surface of your metals.
I had a guy storing a collection of brass fittings in a cardboard box. Six months later, they were all spotted and dull. He blamed us. We opened the box and the cardboard smelled like vinegar. That was the acid gassing off. We swapped him into hard plastic totes with gaskets, and his next batch stayed perfect.
The Silver Curse
If you are a silver stacker, I know you already know the pain of tarnishing. But let me tell you what you might be doing wrong.
Stop touching your silver with your bare hands.
I know, I know, it’s yours, you want to feel it. But your fingers are greasy. Even if you don’t feel greasy, you are leaving behind salt and oil. That salt acts as a catalyst. It speeds up the tarnishing process exponentially.
And for the love of everything good, get rid of the rubber bands.
If you wrap a rubber band around a stack of coins or silver bars, that rubber contains sulfur. Sulfur is kryptonite for silver. It will leave a black, sticky, permanent stain on the metal that you will never polish out. We see this all the time when people move out of their units and they’re horrified to find black stripes across their silver.
Use cotton gloves. Use paper coin flips. Don’t use elastics. It’s an easy fix.
The Pest Factor (Yeah, really)
Nobody thinks about bugs and mice when they think about metal. But I can tell you from experience, rodents pee on everything.
If a mouse gets into your unit—and I’m not saying they will, we do a lot to keep them out, but it happens in the storage industry—they will run across your box of metal shavings or your copper piping and they will pee on it.
Rodent urine is highly corrosive. It’s full of uric acid. It will eat a pit into aluminum and copper faster than rain will. So, if your unit isn’t sealed up tight, you are inviting trouble.
I always tell people: if you are storing metal, your containers need to be critter-proof. That means no gaps in the lids. If you can see a sliver of light through the lid, a mouse can get in.
- Check your seals. Those clear plastic totes with the blue lids are great, but the latch can wear out. If the lid doesn’t snap down tight, replace the tote. It’s cheaper than replacing your metal.
- Don’t store food nearby. Even a bag of birdseed or dog food in the same unit will attract rodents straight to your stuff. Keep it separate or don’t bring it at all.
When You Shouldn’t Go Cheap
Now, I’m not just saying this to upsell you, but if you are storing precious metals—I mean actual gold, platinum, or large quantities of silver—you need a climate-controlled unit.
We have those here. Yes, they cost a little more. But here is the reality: In a standard unit, the temperature fluctuates. It swings with the seasons.
But the real danger isn’t the heat. It’s the swing between heat and cold. The constant expansion and contraction forces microscopic gaps in your packaging. It draws in damp air when the sun goes down.
In a climate-controlled space, we keep the air moving. We keep it stable. It’s boring. It’s consistent. And consistency is the best friend of a metal collector.
If you have a single gold bar worth five grand, are you really going to risk it just to save twenty bucks a month on a standard unit? That doesn’t make any sense to me, and it probably doesn’t make sense to you either.
Check Your Bins
Here is the last thing I want you to do before you lock up.
Grab your bin. Shake it. Does it rattle?
If you have loose metal pieces banging against each other, they are scraping. Those scrapes create microscopic bare spots where oxygen can latch on. You are basically creating a weak spot for rust to start.
Wrap your individual pieces in old cotton t-shirts. Separate them. If you are storing tools, wrap the heads. Don’t just toss a bunch of angle irons into a metal trash can. That is a recipe for disaster.
The Truth
Look, we aren’t miracle workers here. We provide the space. We keep the rain off your head and the thieves out of the yard. But we can’t control what’s inside your box. That is on you.
What we can do is give you a fighting chance. We offer the stable environment, the dry roofs, and the security.
But if you walk through our gate today and rent a unit, and you throw your metal collection into a soggy cardboard box on the floor, it’s going to rust. That’s just physics. We can’t fix physics.
So, please, for your own sake, invest in decent plastic totes, buy some silica gel packs off Amazon for five bucks, and don’t touch your coins with Cheeto fingers.
