Retirement Decluttering Tips for a Stress-Free Move

So you’re thinking about retirement. Or maybe you’re already there. Congrats by the way. But I gotta ask. Have you looked around your house lately? Like really looked?

Yeah. I thought so.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about retiring. You don’t just stop working. You suddenly have to face every single thing you’ve been ignoring for twenty years. That closet you shove stuff into before guests come over? You can’t hide from it anymore because now you’re home all day. It’s staring at you.

My dad retired last year. First thing he did? Not golf. Not fishing. He spent three weekends just cleaning out the garage. Three weekends. He found a box of cables. Just cables. For stuff we haven’t owned since I was in high school. He almost cried out of frustration.

And that’s exactly why I’m writing this.

The storage unit trick

Look. I run a storage place. So yeah I’m biased. But I’m also telling you the truth because I see this play out every single month.

People come in all stressed out. They’re selling the big house. Moving to a condo or a smaller place or maybe even moving in with kids (good luck with that one). And they have no idea what to do with their stuff.

So they start throwing things away. Good things. Things they regret later.

Or they keep everything and their new place looks like a hoarder show.

Here’s what actually works. Rent a unit. Move the stuff you’re unsure about into that unit. Not the junk. Not the trash. The stuff that has meaning but doesn’t have a place right now.

Then live in your new smaller space for like six months. See what you actually miss. See what you actually need.

Then go back to the unit and deal with it. You’ll be way more clear headed. I promise.

What we see at our place

We have this one customer, older lady, retired nurse. She rented a unit from us back in February. Filled it with furniture from her mom’s house. China cabinet, old sofa, lamps, the whole deal. She didn’t want any of it in her apartment but she couldn’t bear to sell it.

She came by last week to pay her rent. I asked her how she’s doing with it. She said she’s finally ready to sell most of it. Kept one little end table. That’s it. Took her eight months to get there. But she got there without any guilt or panic.

That’s what storage does. It gives you time. Time to be ready.

A few things I’ve learned from watching people

Some stuff you should probably keep even if it’s annoying:

  • Old photos (scan them though, seriously).
  • One or two things from your parents that actually mean something.
  • Tools if you still use them.
  • That one piece of art you actually love.

Stuff you can let go of right now without a storage unit:

  • Broken stuff you swore you’d fix (you won’t).
  • Clothes from 40 pounds ago (be honest with yourself).
  • Every single cable and charger from old phones.
  • Dishes you never use because they’re “too nice”.

I’m not saying be ruthless. I’m just saying don’t pay rent on stuff you don’t even like.

The part about our service

We’ve got units of all sizes. Nothing fancy. Just clean, dry, safe. Month to month so you’re not stuck in some year long thing. You can come and go whenever. We’re not going to bother you.

If you’re retiring or getting ready to, come grab a unit. Move the hard decisions out of your house for a while. Give yourself room to breathe. You’ve earned that.

One last honest thought

Retirement is supposed to be the good part. The part where you finally relax. Don’t let your stuff steal that from you. It’s just stuff. Seriously.

But if you’re not ready to say goodbye to some of it yet? That’s fine too. That’s literally what we’re here for.

Stop by whenever. We’ll get you set up in like ten minutes.
