Look, nobody wakes up thinking “today’s the day I’m gonna blow off my storage bill.”
You meant to pay it. Really. But then the car needed tires. Or your kid got sick and you missed a week of work. Or honestly? You just forgot because your brain is holding onto 47 other things right now.
Been there. Seriously.
I work at Nearby Storage Rentals and I’ve seen this happen to good people. Not deadbeats. Not scammers. Just regular humans who hit a rough patch or got distracted.
So let me walk you through what actually happens next. No judgment. Just the stuff you need to know.
Right after you miss the due date
Nothing happens immediately.
Most storage places give you a little breathing room. Usually 5 to 10 days. You won’t get locked out. Nobody’s gonna call you at 6 AM. You can still show up and grab that winter coat you forgot.
During this time, you can still pay like normal. No late fee. No problem.
But here’s where people mess up. They know they’re late and they get embarrassed so they just… avoid it. Don’t do that. We don’t care why you’re late. We just want our money or your stuff gone. Not in a mean way. In a business way.
After the grace period ends
Now you get a late fee.
How much? Depends on the place. Some charge $15 flat. Some charge 10% of your monthly rent. Some stack another fee every week you don’t pay.
At Nearby Storage Rentals, we keep ours fair because we know things happen. But fair still means a fee. We can’t waive it every single time or nobody would pay on time.
This is also when your gate code usually stops working. You can’t get in after hours anymore. If you need something from your unit, you have to come during office hours and ask. Awkward? Yeah a little. But that’s how you know we’re serious.
Two to four weeks late
Now we put an overlock on your unit.
That’s a second lock we put over yours. You can’t open it even if you have the key. We do this because we’ve had people come in at 2 AM and empty their whole unit while owing us $400. That’s not cool.
So the overlock goes on. You can’t get your stuff until you pay at least something.
Here’s a trick most people don’t know. Even if you can’t pay the full balance, call us and ask “can I pay half today and get back in?” Sometimes we’ll say yes. Sometimes we need the full amount. But you won’t know unless you ask.
The lien letter shows up
Around 30 to 45 days late, things get official.
You’ll get a certified letter in the mail. Not an email. Not a text. An actual paper letter you have to sign for. That letter says: “You owe $XXX. Pay by this date or we’re selling your stuff.”
Don’t ignore this.
I can’t tell you how many people get that letter, shove it in a drawer, and act like it didn’t happen. Then three weeks later they’re shocked when their stuff gets auctioned.
That letter is your final warning. Read it. Circle the date. Do something.
The auction
If you still don’t pay, your unit gets sold.
Someone bids 50or500 on your whole unit without even looking inside. They cut your lock, haul everything away, and either sell it piece by piece or throw it in a dumpster if it’s junk.
You don’t get anything back. Not your photo albums. Not your kids’ artwork. Not that toolbox your dad gave you. Gone.
And here’s the part nobody tells you. If your unit sells for less than what you owed, you still owe the difference. The storage company can send that to collections. It goes on your credit report. It looks bad. It stays there for years.
So you lose your stuff and you still have to pay. Worst of both worlds.
What you should actually do
If you’re reading this and you’re already late, stop scrolling and pick up your phone.
Call your storage place. Say these exact words: “I’m behind but I don’t want to lose my stuff. What can we work out?”
Most places will work with you because we don’t want your junk. No really. We don’t want to auction your unit. It’s a pain. We have to take photos, post the listing, deal with angry calls from you after it’s sold. We hate it.
At Nearby Storage Rentals, we’ve done payment plans. We’ve let people move to a smaller unit in the middle of the night. We’ve even knocked off late fees for people who were honest and just needed one break.
But we can’t help if you disappear. Silence is what gets your stuff sold.
One more thing
Don’t let pride cost you your stuff.
I’ve had people cry at my counter because they were too embarrassed to tell me they lost their job. I’ve had people lie and say the check is in the mail when we both know it’s not. Just be straight with us.
We’re not monsters. We run a business, yeah. But we’re also humans who have been late on bills ourselves.
So if you can’t pay today, fine. Tell us when you can. Even if it’s three weeks from now. Even if it’s just $50. Something is better than nothing. And nothing gets your stuff sold.
Bottom line
You won’t go to jail over a storage bill. But you will lose everything in that unit. And you might wreck your credit for a long time.
Don’t let that happen over a conversation you were too scared to have.
Call your storage place. Call us at Nearby Storage Rentals. We’ll figure it out. And if you’re current on your bill? Good. Now go pay it early and never think about this again.
